Meet Visage Salon & Spa

For the month of June, we’re celebrating Pride Month by highlighting local businesses owned by members of the LGBTQ+ community. Below you’ll meet Ray and Lyn, co-owners at Visage Salon & Spa located in Oradell, NJ.

How it all started

Visage Salon & Spa started 24 years ago, and their product line YOOR kicked off more recently just four years ago. Ray and Lyn told us that they started the business because they wanted to create their own opportunity to grow professionally.

“My business partner and I had worked together for about seven years and were both leaving the salon we were currently at to open a salon. We decided to partner up and open Visage. Our initial location had previously been a salon and we were able to do a small renovation as well as put in a lot of elbow grease using our savings. We have since expanded three times. Financial issues and staffing are always a challenge but owning a business has so many day to day responsibilities you have to find ways to compromise and work as a team.”

Taking the next steps

Their professional haircare and color line, YOOR, was conceptualized in 2017 with a goal to create a healthier haircare line for stylists and clients. “Manufacturing had a huge learning curve and again we moved forward just using our savings. Having limited access to funding probably slowed the process but we were determined to have no debt. It took almost three years to launch but we did it in February of 2020,” Ray and Lyn explained.

They also explained that COVID was their biggest challenge but since YOOR was created debt-free, it enabled them to continue moving forward without some of the huge burdens that other businesses were facing.

“We have not only survived but have grown from a two-person salon to employing 24 people and we have created a brand (YOOR) that is recognized globally,” the co-owners shared when we asking what they are most proud of.

Sharing wise words

“It’s not easy, so follow your passion, believe in yourself and your team, and continue to educate yourself so that you can grow. And most importantly, learn to enjoy the process.”

Here’s to another 24 years in business! Thank you for Ray and Lyn for sharing their story and if you’re in the area, check them out!
